For decades, the nation's jails and prisons had little formal role in immigration enforcement. It was possible for an illegal immigrant to be arrested for a crime, be convicted, serve time, then be released, without ever being turned over for deportation. Now, the federal immigration agency has a plan to keep that from happening.
This is astounding, given the fact that a recent immigration sweep netting "only" 400 was the largest in US history. The scale of this operation is truly frightening.
Isn't it interesting how the world turns. Here is Ronald Reagan imploring Mikhail Gorbachev to "tear down this wall". A few years later, the USA is in the wall building business. They tell us that it is to "keep people out". No doubt that is what the Soviets told their citizens as they were fencing them in.
First they came for the criminals, but I wasn't a criminal...
Then they came for the immigrants, but I wasn't an immigrant...
